چکیده

This paper presents initial results in a study comparing the eflectiveness of visible and infra-red ( IR) imagery for detecting and recognizing faces in areas where personnel identification i s critical, (e.g., airports and secure buildings). W e compare the effectiveness of visible versus IR imagery by running three face recognition algorithms on a database of images collected for this study. There are both I R and visible images for each person in the database collected using the same scenarios. W e used three very different feature-extraction and decision-making algorithms for our study to insure that the comparisons would not depend on a particular processing technique. W e also present recognition results when visible and infra-red decision metrics are fused. The recognition results show that both visible and IR imagery perform similarly across algorithms and that fusion of IR and visible imagery is a viable means of enhancing performance beyond that of either acting alone. W e examine the relative importance of different regions of the face for recognition. W e also discuss practical issues of implementation, along with plans for the next phase of the study, face detection in an uncontrolled environment. Preliminary face detection results are presented.

IR and visible light face recognition

This paper presents the results of several large-scale studies of face recognition employing visible light and infra-red (IR) imagery in the context of principal component analysis. We find that in a scenario involving time lapse between gallery and probe, and relatively controlled lighting, (1) PCA-based recognition using visible light images outperforms PCA-based recognition using infra-red i...

Comparison of Visible, Thermal Infra-Red and Range Images for Face Recognition

Existing literature compares various biometric modalities of the face for human identification. The common criterion used for comparison is the recognition rate of different face modalities using the same recognition algorithms. Such comparisons are not completely unbiased as the same recognition algorithm or features may not be suitable for every modality of the face. Moreover, an important as...

A survey on heterogeneous face recognition: Sketch, infra-red, 3D and low-resolution

Heterogeneous face recognition (HFR) refers to matching face imagery across different domains. It has received much interest from the research community as a result of its profound implications in law enforcement. A wide variety of new invariant features, cross-modality matching models and heterogeneous datasets being established in recent years. This survey provides a comprehensive review of e...

Minutiae Based Thermal Human Face Recognition using Label Connected Component Algorithm

In this paper, a thermal infra red face recognition system for human identification and verification using blood perfusion data and back propagation feed forward neural network is proposed. The system consists of three steps. At the very first step face region is cropped from the colour 24-bit input images. Secondly face features are extracted from the croped region, which will be taken as the ...

Appearance-Based Facial Recognition Using Visible and Thermal Imagery: A Comparative Study

We present a comprehensive performance analysis of multiple appearance-based face recognition methodologies, on visible and thermal infrared imagery. We compare algorithms within and between modalities in terms of recognition performance, false alarm rates and requirements to achieve specified performance levels. The effect of illumination conditions on recognition performance is emphasized, as...
